چکیده

Abstract The ability to accurately assess renewable energy resources is an essential prerequisite to integrating renewable energy technologies into the energy supply portfolio of a community. This study investigates the potential for wind energy development in Guelph, a growing mid-size city in Southern Ontario, Canada. Community awareness of energy has led to the development of a Community Energy Plan that includes discussion on the utilization of energy supplied from renewable sources. Wind resources are particularly difficult to evaluate at the community level. A preliminary evaluation of the City of Guelph’s wind energy resource was undertaken to determine the degree to which locally-produced wind energy could supply the city’s current and future energy demand. Wind data for Guelph and the nearby village of Elora was sourced from two wind maps (Environment Canada’s Canadian Wind Energy Atlas and the Wind Resource Atlas published by the Ontario Ministry of Natural Resources), as well as the weather stations at the Guelph Turfgrass Institute and the Elora Research Station. These different data sources produced wind energy estimates all within ±44% of each other for a small wind turbine (10 kW). Community scale generation was estimated through a uniform grid of turbines across the city. Nearly 18,000 small wind turbines generate 139 GWh while 128 utility-scale turbines generate 424 GWh. These utility-scale turbines could potentially deliver 24% of Guelph’s 2005 electrical demand.

Wind resource assessment of Khuzestan province in Iran

In this research paper, a 10 minute period measured wind speed data at 10 m, 30 m, and 40 m heights are presented for one of the major provinces of Iran. Four stations in Khuzestan- Abadan, Hosseyneh, Mahshahr, and Shushtar- are analyzed to determine the potential of wind power generation in this province. From the primary evaluation and by determining mean wind speed and also the Weibull f...

Impact of Using Renewable Energy on the Cost of Electricity and Environment in Northern Cameroon

This paper determines and compares the cost of energy (COE) of various hybrid systems for several off-grid facilities in North and Far North regions of Cameroon by integrating renewable sources and/or storage with diesel generators. The estimated annual energy production by solar PV systems and wind turbines is also discussed. The aim is to study the application of a high penetration renewable ...

Investigation of Vertical Wind Shear Characteristics Using 50m Meteorological Tower Data

Wind measurement is important for estimating wind energy potential, but it is relatively cost-intensive and often conducted at a narrow height from the ground level. The typical range of most turbine hub heights is from 30-50 m or even higher. Extrapolation on wind data thus becomes necessary to estimate the wind speed at different heights. Doing so requires the essential understanding of wind ...

Evaluation of Time Series Patterns for Wind Speed Volatilities in Anzali Meteorological Station

Abstract. One of the major problems in using wind energy is that wind-generated electricity is more unstable than electricity generated by other sources, and therefore integrating wind energy use with traditional power generation systems can be a challenge. This problem can be effectively reduced by having accurate information about the mean and wind speed volatilities. Therefore, in this paper...
